History

September 25th marks the anniversary of the first raising of the Franco-Ontarian flag that was held in 1975 at the Laurentian University in Sudbury. Its two creators, Michel Dupuis and Gaétan Gervais, created the flag in the image of the people it represented: the trille for Ontario, the lys for the French language, the green for the summers and the white for the winters. The flag became the official symbol of the province in 2011. (Source : ACFO Sudbury)

It is only as of 2010 that September 25th became the official Franco-Ontarian Day (Le Jour des Franco-Ontariens et Franco-Ontariennes). The law on this official day, unanimously adopted on April 26th 2010 by the Legislative Assembly, proclaimed September 25th of each year as the Franco-Ontarian Day. Every year, this day recognizes the contribution of the Francophone community of Ontario to the culture, history, society, economy and politics of the province. The proclamation of this day is a concrete action from the province to sustain the Franco-Ontarian community.
